Jeff Zausch was born on June 5, 1987, in Pocatello, Idaho, and spent his youth in the state’s rural southeast. He graduated from Century High School in 2005 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Earth and Environmental Systems from Idaho State University in 2011.
Zausch “grew up as an adrenaline-loving outdoorsman” in Pocatello. He called Idaho’s wilderness the “perfect environment” for developing primitive hunting skills and came from a “family of very accomplished hunters.” His grandfather taught him practical outdoor skills, including tracking, trapping, hunting, and shelter-building. His father instilled mental toughness, resilience, and perseverance, while his mother imparted optimism and strategic thinking.

Discovery Channel Debut and Initial Survival Challenges
Jeff Zausch entered reality-television survival in 2014 on the Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid, completing a 21-day wilderness ordeal naked in Madagascar. He returned in 2015 for the Naked and Afraid XL spinoff, enduring a 40-day challenge in the Colombian jungle. Comparing the experiences, Zausch stated, “XL was exponentially more difficult than my first go-round in Madagascar.”
During these early challenges, he navigated issues ranging from barefoot desert injuries to extreme food procurement, including surviving multiple shocks while spearing an electric eel. He completed both on-camera challenges without tapping out.
Naked and Afraid Franchise Expansion and Legend Status
Over the following decade, Zausch appeared in all-star editions including Naked and Afraid XL and Naked and Afraid: Savage—frequently partnering with fellow survivalist Laura Zerra. In 2019, Zausch and Zerra completed a 60-day Naked and Afraid XL challenge in the Philippines, marking the longest survival stretch in the series’ history.
By 2022, his six appearances on the flagship show gave him the record for the most days survived. In mid-2023, network reports summarized his record as encompassing “6 different challenges, 6 different countries, 4 continents, [and] 200+ days” in the wild. These achievements earned him the title of an all-star or “Legend” contestant.
He was also one of five finalists in the inaugural head-to-head competition, Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing, in 2023. Throughout his tenure with the franchise, Zausch never tapped out. During one 60-day challenge, he remarked, “I wasn’t scared…ultimate failure would be tapping out.”
Television Hosting and Crossover Reality Programming
Zausch later transitioned into hosting and crossover reality television. In 2016, he became a co-host on the Discovery Channel’s Dual Survival alongside E.J. Snyder. The spinoff paired the survivalists to navigate harsh environments ranging from the deserts of Utah to the mountains of Brazil. Expanding beyond the Discovery network, Zausch competed in 2022 on the USA Network’s Snake in the Grass, a social-strategy survival game featuring former Survivor castaways.
He has stated that he chooses projects selectively; to date, only Naked and Afraid and Dual Survival have featured his participation. In these roles, he brings primitive skills and wilderness tactics to diverse audiences as a host and survivalist.
Jeff Zausch as a Public Speaker and Motivational Figure
Jeff Zausch channels his wilderness experiences into public speaking engagements, translating survival situations into lessons focused on determination and mental toughness. He brings an attitude of resilience from jungle environments to the stage. As a featured guest speaker at the 2026 American Conservation Coalition (ACC) Summit’s awards ceremony, Zausch discussed perseverance in high-stress survival situations, sharing anecdotes from his grueling expeditions.
He frames these challenges as practical lessons in leadership under extreme conditions, establishing a reputation as a motivational figure who imparts physical and mental survival skills.
